Starcross to Exmouth, Devon - September 2007

There is a really useful boat trip in Exmouth that is perfect for avoiding the drive around the coast to get from Dawlish Warren to Exmouth. The Starcross ferry goes from the railway station at Starcross village (nr. Dawlish Warren) and takes passengers across the estuary to Exmouth, setting down by the newly developed marina.
The ferry service takes about 20 minutes and follows what appears to be a winding indirect route across to Exmouth taking you very close to the Dawlish Warren sand dunes, however when the tide goes out huge sandbanks emerge from the sea which show why the pilot has had to navigate around them.
The ferry operators were very friendly and very good at helping passengers to embark and disembark which is particularly useful if you have small children.
The boat itself has an open deck at the stern and a covered seating area, or you can sit on the open top deck which gives the passengers a great view (although slightly obscured by the wheelhouse). If you go to the front of the top deck you will find some steps leading down to a smaller seating area at the bow. There is an internal seating area for a dozen or more people as well as a small area right at the front which gives you the best possible view. The service runs regularly and leaves Starcross on the hour and leaves Exmouth at half past the hour. The prices for the return trip were very reasonable and they also run on Sundays.
