Historic Docks, Portsmouth - August 2006

Last summer my partner and I visited the Historic Docks at Portsmouth, home of HMS Warrior, The Mary Rose and Nelson's HMS Victory. There were many great attractions but one of our favourites included in ticket price was a 45 minute harbour tour.
My partner often suffers from sea sickness so we were a little unsure of going. But once we set off it was great. The boat we were on was very comfortable and we were able to sit on the roof deck where we had a clear 360 degree view of the harbour. Refreshments were available but we were far more interested in looking at the various British warships, there were also visiting ships from the USA and Russia which were fascinating to see. The pilot gave a friendly and clear commentary telling us about the boats and ships in the harbour and where they were from.
The harbour tour boat stops near the newly developed Gunwharf Quays where you can disembark and take a look around or if you wish you can stay onboard until the boat arrives at it's destination at the Historic Docks. If you do get off at Gunwharf Quays however, you will have to make the short walk back to the Historic Dock yourself as the boat only docks briefly to let people on and off. Gunwharf quays is full of bars, restaurants and shops and is also close to the Spinnaker tower, one of Portsmouth's most famous modern landmarks. You can go to the top of tower where there are fantastic views of the city and harbour. If we hadn't taken the boat trip we would have missed this whole area which is definitely worth a visit.
