Wednesday 7th October, Ken Endean, Rough Pilotage and Rough Water.
Ken Endean is a well known author and contributor to Yachting Monthly. His book "Channel Havens - The secret inlets and secluded anchorages of the Channel" continues to get excellent reviews. Ken with his wife Mary, sail "London Apprentice", a bilge keel Sabre 27 built by Marcon Marine in the early 1970s. An interesting and well known yacht design and one that can possibly reach places others cannot. Like most yachts it has been altered a little over time, including having the inboard engine removed to make room for a vegetable rack! You've read the YM articles, now meet the author. This should be a fascinating evening. Come and join us for this the inaugural meeting this autumn. For location and times, please see website.
Wednesday 14th October, Colin Lewis, Helicopter Round Britain - Coastal Views.
Colin Lewis, commodore of the Royal Southampton Yacht Club will show a film of a round Britain Helicopter flight made in Spring 2008 exploring many areas of familiar coastline. It may be that you will be able to spot your own boat on its berth. The film was made as a charity initiative supporting many charities including Colin's RSYC favourite Marie Curie Cancer Care. The film is available as a DVD and is available for purchase from the club.
Wednesday October 21st, Captain Colin Johnstone, View from the Bridge.
Colin is both a yachtsman and professional seaman. At 34 he commanded his own ship for P&O containers before moving rapidly into senior management. Colin is a member of the Nautical Institute and the Honourable Company of Master Mariners. A member of the Royal Southampton Yacht club, Colin currently owns a Beneteau Oceanis 411 and cruises out of Hythe Marina. Colin is one of the few people who knows and feels how it is to be in command of a commercial vessel when there are yachts in the offing; and how it feels as a yachtsman when fast moving ships are around. We are most privileged to have him to speak to us.
Wednesday October 28th, Members' Evening, A Memorable Passage.
Five members will thrill us all with descriptions of passages they'll never forget. Bring along your cockpit snacks - you might win the prize for the most succulent and imaginative fare. RNLI Christmas cards will be on sale.
