GXSA (Gerrards Cross Sailing Association)

Wednesday November 11th, Chris Woodwark and Others, Four Cruises of the Grampus.
Club members Chris Woodwark and his crew, Russell Wendover, Richard Ogden, Jim Cannon and Terry Smart will give us a talk on their cruises between the Isle of Man, Northern Ireland, the Outer Hebrides, St Kilda, the West coast of Scotland, Orkneys and the East coast since 2000. This will cover what, for many of us, is a lifetimes cruising. Others might see it as an opportunity to help plan destinations for 2010. It should be a most enjoyable evening.
Wednesday November 18th, Bernard Clarke, World Circumnavigation in a Westerly Ocean Lord 41.
Bernard's illustrated talk will cover the pros and cons of doing a world circumnavigation within two years and under the auspices of a World Rally. He will describe some of the wonderful countries and cultures that he, and in part his wife, experienced and the challenges they faced when Ocean sailing aboard "Golden Eye of Chichester".
Wednesday November 25th, Jeremy Batch, King Alfred and Limehouse.
Limehouse Basin is not only the home of the Cruising Association, but also has a fascinating history along with the Lee Valley Navigation which it forms a part. Jeremy will cover the history of this area, important to Great Britain's navigation from the time of King Alfred all the way to the 2012 Olympics. Highlights include our border with Scandinavia, London's lifeline in the Great Plague, tidal power, Britain's first aeroplane, gunpowder, the bouncing glass, gin and the dog biscuit. Intrigued? Come along, and enjoy the talk and learn a little more about this really significant place.

Sailing
Still a couple of places left on the budget weekend sailing in the Solent 6-8 November.
My next weekend is 29/30/31 January. I am negotiating a deal with a different sailing school and hope to be able to reduce this cost to 110 for the weekend. During these weekends, we sup ashore, grab some bacon butties for breakfast and sandwiches for lunch. All mooring and fuel fees are shared amongst the crew, which should be no more than a tenner a head.
Heavy Weather Sailing
I have been asked by the owner of a Contest 35 to take him out and show him the ropes in strong winds. I am looking therefore for a couple of stalwarts, who can, at the drop of a hat, come to join us, sailing out of Lymington for a couple of days. Please let me have your telephone number, if interested.
We would cover all aspects of boat management in strong winds, use of sea anchors, series drogue and other means of making life a trifle less uncomfortable than it would be under normal circumstances.
Theory Courses
Still a couple of places left on the Day Skipper Theory course I am running between now and Christmas in Cheltenham. Dates are: 24/5 October, 28/9 November, 12/13 December.
I am also running a Day Skipper theory course for freelancers and farmers in the Cotswolds on weekdays in 2010. Dates are: 4/5 January, 8/9 February, 8/9 March.
I can take one more on the Yachtmaster Offshore and Coastal theory course scheduled for the next three months. Dates are: 31 October/1 November, 21/22 November, 9/10 January 2010.
Anyone for the VHF/DSC qualification? If you have a group of three or four, I can come to your neck of the woods and run a course for you.
