GXSA (Gerrards Cross Sailing Association)

Wednesday January 6th, John Andrews and Freda Haylet, Quyvers Travels
Adventures on a voyage from Grenada via the Panama Canal and Pacific Islands to New Zealand. A fascinating talk on the sailing, the ports of call, and the camaraderie of fellow yachtsman. We are privileged to hear this presentation. Come along and live your dreams and shake off the post Christmas blues.
13th January 2010, Mel Errington, The Golden Age of British Merchant Fleets
Club member Mel Errington recounts his experiences as a seagoing cadet and Engineering Officer with the British Fleet of NZSCo. Drama in the South Pacific - Ingenuity in the North Atlantic - coloured by a proud tradition of crews that had gone before. The 1950's & 1960's was the end of a golden era before the arrival of container vessels. Gone are the cadet ships of the British Merchant Fleet never to be replaced. The training, responsibility and experiences offered to a young man were life changing and remained with one forever.
Wednesday January 20th, Dick Batt, Olympic Sailing - Qingdao 2008 to Portland 2012
Dick Batt (Batt Sails, Bosham) Chief measurer for the Olympic Sailing and renowned sail maker, who serves on many national and international bodies, tells us what goes on behind the scenes from the Chinese Sailing Olympics in 2008 to Portland in 2012. His company Batt Sails was initially formed in Maidenhead in 1980, moved to High Wycombe and then more recently to Bosham.
Wednesday January 27th, Kathy Mansfield, Classic Yachts through the Camera Lens
Professional photographer Kathy Mansfield a regular contributor to "Water Craft" and "Classic Boat" magazines returns with stunning images of Metre Class yachts, from their recent Centenary Celebrations. A yacht based on the 8 metre rule is typically an elegant 50 ft long classic wooden boat with a bowsprit. The larger 12 metre yachts are the basis of the yachts used in the America cup. The sight of these boats racing is breathtaking. This evening should be unforgettable for both sailors and photographers alike.

Sailing
Still a couple of places left on the budget weekend sailing in the Solent 6-8 November.
My next weekend is 29/30/31 January. I am negotiating a deal with a different sailing school and hope to be able to reduce this cost to 110 for the weekend. During these weekends, we sup ashore, grab some bacon butties for breakfast and sandwiches for lunch. All mooring and fuel fees are shared amongst the crew, which should be no more than a tenner a head.

Aquacast - Issue 14/2010
2010 has started off with everything at least 4 - 6 weeks behind normal years, probably due to the extremely cold water following our great winter! Pollack have shown on most of the far offshore wrecks but the first few weeks were very patchy. However we have now been enjoying some good sport with larger than normal sized Pollack and they are coming closer in, better late than never. The good news is that we have now had our 1st Cod of the year off the wrecks, a very nice 9lb fish. We can now look forward to many good days of Cod fishing, if last year is anything to go by, combined with Bream off the Kingmere rocks, Bass on the 10 mile wrecks, and of course, our very popular Conger days. If you want to try and tame the beasts of the wrecks look out for our Fish and Mix Conger days. These are normally on a neap tide and we use Mackerel flappers on very strong rigs. See if you can beat the boat record of 98 lbs!
SKIPPERS INVITATION
We had a very successful Skippers invitation day recently when the Pollack were fighting. If you want to join these days all you need to do is book up a group trip at least twice in 2010.
THE BOAT
To assist with fuel economy we fitted some Interceptors on the back of the jets during the winter refit. They have really helped but now the price of fuel has gone up, we can't win.
LURES, WHICH ONE AND WHEN
Today lures come in a multitude of patterns, they all catch fish but remember that fish don't follow fashion - some of them catch more anglers than fish, more often than not we find that the standard types like jelly worms and leadheads can give the best results especially when the tide goes "slack". Jellies work particulary well in these conditions as they don't need much current to make them perform, unlike weighted shads that can go dead in these conditions. Twintail leadheads are also proving to be killers when things go quiet, fish them on a short dropper from a french boom rig and trip them up and down off the bottom (similar to feathering) Cod especially seem to be attracted by the disurbance they make when they hit the sea bed. It always pays off to watch other anglers to see what lures they are catching on, as well as asking advice from the skipper, he is out there every day and knows what is taking the best.
